Neighborhood Guide · The Heights
Living in The Heights, Houston
The Heights is Houston's most consistently walkable neighborhood — bungalow-lined streets, indie boutiques on 19th Street, and the M-K-T trail running through the middle. Rental stock includes converted bungalows, modern townhomes along Yale Street, and a growing crop of boutique mid-rises.
Major employers
Northwell Health (Memorial Hermann Heights), Halliburton (close by), Small business + creative agencies, Houston ISD, Multiple breweries and craft food operations.
Schools
Most addresses are zoned Houston ISD with feeder schools Travis Elementary, Hamilton Middle, and Heights High School. Several charter and private school options exist nearby (Yorkshire Academy, Saint Stephen's).
Dining and entertainment
Eight Row Flint, Pinkerton's Barbecue, Better Luck Tomorrow, Squable, Lee's Fried Chicken & Donuts — The Heights punches well above its weight on dining. White Oak Music Hall hosts mid-tier touring acts; the 19th Street District is the de facto Saturday-morning hangout.
Commute information
Downtown Houston: 10–15 minutes via I-10 or surface streets. Medical Center: 20–25 minutes. The METRORail Red Line doesn't reach The Heights, so most residents drive or bike.
Apartment price expectations
Studios start around $1,200. One-bedrooms in newer mid-rises run $1,700–$2,400. Renovated bungalows and townhomes can reach $3,500+. Specials are less common here — demand consistently outpaces supply.
Who this neighborhood is best for
Walkability-first renters, young professionals who want neighborhood character without leaving Houston, and remote workers who value a strong third-space coffee scene.
